Oconomowoc Coons

Oconomowoc Coons

The origin of the Oconomowoc Coons name is no longer publicly known, but it is likely that it was chosen as a reference to the raccoon, a common animal in the area. The raccoon is also a symbol of intelligence, adaptability, and resourcefulness, which are all qualities that the school's athletes and students strive to embody.

However, the name "Coons" is also a racial slur against Black people, and it has a long history of being used to dehumanize and oppress them. As a result, the Oconomowoc school district decided to retire the name in 2021.

The school district's decision to retire the name was met with mixed reactions. Some people supported the decision, arguing that it was necessary to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all students. Others opposed the decision, arguing that it was an erasure of the school's history and tradition.
