Have you ever wondered about the origins of your favorite comfort food? Let's dive into the history and recipe of the Alabama Hotpocket, a beloved Southern delicacy.

What's an Alabama Hot Pocket?

Alabama hotpockets are a type of sandwich popular in the southern United States. This deep-fried dish is made with biscuit-like dough filled with spicy sausage.

Alabama hot pockets come from the state of Alabama in the United States. There are a variety of ingredients in this hot pocket sandwich, like chicken or turkey, bacon, and cheese. A flaky pastry dough encases these ingredients.

Scott Mitchell, who's from Huntsville, Alabama, invented the dish in the late 1970s. According to Mitchell, the Hot Pocket, another meat-and-vegetable dish, inspired him.

The sandwich is most commonly associated with Alabama, but Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida have also adopted it.

Variants on the Alabama Hot Pocket

There are other versions of the hot pocket including the Kentucky Hot Pocket or Kentucky Hot Brown which consists of turkey, bacon, tomatoes, and a cheesy sauce.

An Alabama hotpocket is something that can be made at home with ingredients of your choosing. I think I would much prefer a homemade hot pocket, whether it be the Alabama-style hot pocket or another version, than the frozen versions you can buy in grocery stores.

Personally, I would make a breakfast-style hot pocket with cheese, sausage, red bell peppers, and tomatoes. With plenty of seasoning of course.
