Jim Harbaugh Announces Resignation As Michigan Head Coach

Ann Arbor, MI - University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh announced today that he will be resigning at the end of the 2023 season. Harbaugh, who has been the Wolverines' head coach since 2015, has led the team to a 68-53 record, including a Big Ten championship and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2021.

"I have decided to step down as head football coach at the University of Michigan after the 2023 season," Harbaugh said in a statement. "This was a difficult decision, but I believe it is in the best interests of my family and the team."

Harbaugh said that he considered stepping down immediately, but decided to stay on for the rest of the season to finish the journey with his team.

"The young men on this team have worked their whole lives for this, and dedicated this part of those lives to the Maize and Blue," Harbaugh said. "I already missed several games to start this season, and I owe it to these men to finish the journey 2023 is with them."

Harbaugh's resignation comes at a time when the Michigan football program is under investigation by the NCAA for recruiting violations and a new signal stealing scandal. However, Harbaugh denied that the investigations played any role in his decision to step down.

"My decision is not related to the ongoing NCAA investigation," Harbaugh said. "I have always cooperated fully with the NCAA, and I am confident that the University of Michigan will be cleared of any wrongdoing."

Harbaugh is one of the most successful college football coaches of his generation. He won a conference championship at Stanford in 2011, and he has led Michigan to the Big Ten championship game four times. Harbaugh is also a former NFL head coach, having led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2012.

Harbaugh's resignation is a major blow to the Michigan football program. He is a popular figure with fans and players alike, and he has helped to rebuild the Wolverines into one of the top programs in the country.

It is unclear who will replace Harbaugh as Michigan's head coach. However, the Wolverines are sure to attract a number of top candidates, given the success that Harbaugh has had at the school.
