Scottsdale Community College Artichokes

The Scottsdale Community College Artichokes got their name in a rather unique way. In the early 1970s, the school was going through a period of student unrest. In response to budget cuts, students decided to hold a mock election for a new school mascot. The choices were the "Artichokes," the "Scoundrels," and the "Rutabagas."

The students intended the "Artichokes" name to be a joke, but it ended up winning the election by a landslide. The school administration was not amused, but they eventually decided to accept the results of the election.
