How Did James Madison Dukes Get Their Name?

James Madison University's athletic teams, known as the Dukes, have a unique origin story that sets them apart from other college teams.

The Birth of the Dukes

The first men's basketball team at James Madison University was formed in 1947. The players chose the nickname "The Dukes" in honor of Madison President Samuel P. Duke. They even made a deal with President Duke: they would name the team after him if he provided them with towels and equipment.

The Evolution of the Name

Initially, the women's teams were called the "Duchesses," but this name was dropped in 1982. Since then, all JMU teams have been known as the "Dukes."

The Duke Dog Mascot

The idea for the Duke Dog mascot came from Dr. Ray V. Sonner, then director of public affairs. His rationale was that the stereotypical pet for British royalty, such as a duke, would be an English bulldog. Thus, Duke Dog was born and made its first appearance in the 1972-73 school year.
