Origin of the team name for Boston College Eagles
The Boston College Eagles got their name in 1920. The name was chosen by Rev. Edward McLaughlin, S.J., who was the school's president at the time. McLaughlin was inspired by the Roman god Jupiter, who was often depicted with an eagle as his symbol. The eagle is also a symbol of strength, power, and freedom, which are all qualities that McLaughlin wanted to see in the Boston College student body.
The first live eagle mascot, a bald eagle named Baldwin, was introduced in 1961. Baldwin was named after Rev. Baldwin, who was the school's president from 1949 to 1967. Baldwin served as the school's mascot for over 20 years and was a beloved figure on campus. He died in 1982 and was buried on the Boston College campus.
Today, the Boston College Eagles are represented by a costumed mascot named Spirit. Spirit is a popular figure at Boston College sporting events and helps to keep the Boston College spirit alive.
