Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Preview 2023

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are coming off a 7-6 season in 2022, but they have high hopes for the 2023 campaign. The team returns a number of key players, including quarterback Grayson McCall, running back Shermari Jones, and wide receiver Jaivon Heiligh.

McCall is one of the best quarterbacks in the Sun Belt Conference. He threw for 3,155 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2022. Jones is a dual-threat running back who rushed for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Heiligh is a big-play receiver who caught 62 passes for 956 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Chanticleers also have a strong defense. They were led by linebacker Silas Kelly, who had 97 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 2022. Defensive backs Shyheim Brown and Enock Emezie are also key players on the defensive side of the ball.

The Chanticleers open the 2023 season with a home game against Liberty on September 2. They also have a tough road game against BYU on September 16. If they can get through those two games with a win, they should be in the mix for a Sun Belt Conference title.

Here is a list of key players for the Chanticleers in 2023, along with their 2022 statistics:

  • Grayson McCall (QB): 3,155 yards, 27 touchdowns, 5 interceptions
  • Shermari Jones (RB): 1,092 yards, 10 touchdowns
  • Jaivon Heiligh (WR): 62 catches, 956 yards, 10 touchdowns
  • Silas Kelly (LB): 97 tackles, 6.5 sacks
  • Shyheim Brown (DB): 63 tackles, 4 interceptions
  • Enock Emezie (DB): 57 tackles, 2 interceptions

The Chanticleers finished the 2022 season with a 4-4 record in Sun Belt Conference play. They were 7-6 overall.

I predict that the Chanticleers will win 8-9 games in 2023. They have the talent to be a contender for the Sun Belt Conference title, but they will need to stay healthy and avoid any major upsets.
