Nebraska enters a new era under coach Matt Rhule, who has a track record of turning programs around, albeit after tough debut seasons at Baylor and Temple. The Cornhuskers are hoping for a smoother transition, especially with Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims expected to take the reins at quarterback. The skill positions look promising with the return of running back Anthony Grant and the addition of transfers Billy Kemp IV and Arik Gilbert to bolster the receiving corps. However, the success of Nebraska's 2023 season hinges on the development of an offensive line that has room for improvement and a defense that allowed 27.6 points per game last year.

Washington State enters the new season with a sense of stability under coach Jake Dickert, but there are challenges ahead. Quarterback Cameron Ward is back after an impressive debut, throwing for 3,231 yards and 23 touchdowns. However, the offensive line, which struggled last year, lost left tackle Jarrett Kingston to USC. The receiving corps also needs to be rebuilt, with junior college recruit DT Sheffield and some transfers expected to step up. On the defensive side, new coordinator Jeff Schmedding takes over a unit that was third in the Pac-12 in points allowed per game last year at 22.9. While new starters will need to emerge at linebacker, the defense can rely on a strong edge-rushing duo in Brennan Jackson and Ron Stone Jr.

Michigan State faces a challenging season ahead, especially with the departure of starting quarterback Payton Thorne and receiver Keon Coleman. The team's success could hinge on the development of junior quarterback Noah Kim, who is tasked with revitalizing an offense that averaged just 19.8 points per game in Big Ten play last year. The offensive line needs to step up, particularly in run blocking, and new playmakers must emerge in the receiving corps to replace Coleman and Jayden Reed. On the defensive side, the Spartans have bolstered their front with transfers, aiming to improve a rush defense that ranked 12th in the Big Ten last season. However, the secondary remains a concern, and defensive coordinator Scottie Hazelton has his work cut out to improve a unit that allowed over 30 points per game in conference play.

47. Pitt

(0-0)

Pitt faces a rebuilding phase on defense, losing key players like tackle Calijah Kancey and linebacker SirVocea Dennis from a unit that allowed only 22.4 points per game in ACC play last year. However, coach Pat Narduzzi's history suggests that the defense will find its footing as the season progresses. On offense, the spotlight is on quarterback Phil Jurkovec, who returns to Pitt after two years at Boston College. Jurkovec has the potential to end his college career on a high note, but he'll need support from an offensive line that returns three starters. The team also has to find replacements for running back Israel Abanikanda and leading receiver Jared Wayne to maintain a balanced attack.

Cincinnati is navigating a sea of changes in 2023, including a transition to the Big 12 and a new head coach in Scott Satterfield. With only seven starters returning, the Bearcats have their work cut out for them. The defense, which allowed just 20.6 points per game last season, is expected to remain solid, anchored by rising star Dontay Corleone on the front line. The key to a successful season and potential bowl appearance will likely be the development of the offense under Satterfield. Emory Jones, a transfer from Florida and Arizona State, is slated to be the starting quarterback. The receiving corps will be bolstered by transfers, and the offensive line, which returns just one starter, will need to quickly gel for the Bearcats to navigate their new challenges successfully.

Auburn is poised for a resurgence under first-year coach Hugh Freeze, largely thanks to an impressive haul from the transfer portal. The Tigers have fortified key positions, including a thin offensive line, quarterback with Payton Thorne, and additional talent at receiver and on defense. Offensively, the team aims to revitalize a passing attack that averaged just 24.8 points per game last season, a task that falls on the shoulders of new coordinator Philip Montgomery. Defensively, new play-caller Ron Roberts inherits a strong secondary but faces the challenge of bolstering a run defense that yielded 172.7 yards per game in 2022. In the fiercely competitive SEC West, Auburn's improvements and strategic use of the transfer portal could be the catalyst for a bowl-eligible season.

44. Oklahoma State

(0-0)

Oklahoma State under Mike Gundy has been a model of consistency, avoiding a losing record since 2005. Despite entering the 2023 season with more uncertainties than usual, the Cowboys are well-positioned for another winning season and bowl appearance. The schedule is favorable, featuring five Big 12 home games and avoiding matchups with Texas, Texas Tech, and TCU. The quarterback situation remains unsettled, with transfer Alan Bowman, Garret Rangel, and true freshman Zane Flores all in the mix. However, the offense has a reliable running back duo in Ollie Gordon II and Jaden Nixon, supported by an experienced offensive line. On the defensive side, new coordinator Bryan Nardo comes in from Gannon University, bringing a 3-3-5 scheme. With only two returning starters, adapting to the new defensive system could be a season-long project.

Arizona is on an upward trajectory under coach Jedd Fisch, improving from a 1-11 record in 2021 to 5-7 in 2022. The Wildcats aim for a bowl appearance this year, their first since 2017. Despite losing top receiver Jacob Singer to USC, the offense looks promising with quarterback Jayden de Laura and receivers Jacob Cowing and Tetairoa McMillan back in the fold. However, the defense remains a concern, having allowed an average of 36.5 points per game last season. The unit returns only three starters and struggled mightily against the run, allowing 209.1 yards per game. A few key transfers could provide immediate help, but significant improvement on defense will be crucial for Arizona to reach or surpass the six-win mark.

East Carolina faces a transitional year after an 8-5 season, with key departures on both sides of the ball. The offense, which averaged 32.5 points per game last year, loses quarterback Holton Ahlers, running back Keaton Mitchell, and standout receivers Isaiah Winstead and C.J. Johnson. The offensive line also returns just one starter, making the task even more daunting for new quarterback Mason Garcia, who will face competition from Alex Flinn. With the offense in flux, the defense may have to carry the load early on. The unit returns six starters but must improve on allowing 6.1 yards per play last season and find a replacement for standout cornerback Malik Fleming. The Pirates will need to quickly find their footing if they aim to contend for the AAC title in 2023.

Minnesota faces the challenge of replacing standout running back Mohamed Ibrahim, but the offense is in capable hands with quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis and a talented receiving corps. The main concern on offense is the offensive line, which must replace three starters, including All-American center John Michael Schmitz. On the defensive side, the Golden Gophers were stingy last year, allowing only 13.8 points per game. However, with just five starters returning and changes at every level of the defense, maintaining that performance will be a tall order. To make matters more challenging, the crossover schedule features tough matchups against Michigan and Ohio State, adding extra hurdles for coach P.J. Fleck and his team.

40. Miami

The Hurricanes' fall from relevancy continued in 2023.  The D couldn't stop anyone more than average, and sometimes not even that.  The offense was a train wreck turnover party.

The talent is there for the 'Canes to rebuild quickly. and Mario Cristobel is all about raking in talent.  More importantly, he should bring back some of that Miami attitude.  Miami won't be relevant,  but they should be fun.

Purdue faces a challenging road to the Big Ten Championship under first-year coach Ryan Walters, especially with the departures of key players like quarterback Aidan O'Connell and receiver Charlie Jones. However, Walters has assembled a strong coaching staff and made significant additions through the transfer portal, including likely starting quarterback Hudson Card. Running back Devin Mockobee is set for another impressive season in new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell's system. While Walters crafted one of the nation's top defenses at Illinois last year, Purdue's defense, which allowed 27.4 points per game in 2022 and returns just four starters, will need considerable work to improve.

Tar Heel fans, shake off the end-of-season blues from last year because North Carolina is geared up for a comeback! With a 9-1 start in the rearview mirror, Coach Mack Brown and the team are focused on the road ahead. Quarterback Drake Maye, a second-team preseason All-American, is back to lead an offense that boasts one of the ACC's deepest backfields. The O-line is on a mission to provide better protection for Maye, and new transfers Devontez Walker and Nate McCollum are stepping in to fill the void left by Josh Downs at receiver. With Chip Lindsey taking over play-calling duties, expect some fresh offensive schemes. On the defensive side, the Tar Heels are determined to improve on last year's stats. Coordinator Gene Chizik has eight returning starters and a solid group of transfers to work with, so expect a tighter defense this season. Arkansas is poised for an explosive offense with the return of quarterback KJ Jefferson and running back Rocket Sanders. The real challenge lies in bolstering a defense that allowed an average of 30.6 points per game last season. New defensive coordinator Travis Williams and head coach Sam Pittman have aggressively utilized the transfer portal, bringing in over 10 players to revamp the defensive unit. On the offensive side, new coordinator Dan Enos faces the task of managing turnover in the offensive line and receiving corps. However, the continuity provided by Jefferson's return is expected to smooth out these transitions.

36. Maryland

Maryland aims to match or exceed last year's eight wins, buoyed by the return of quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and running back Roman Hemby. The offense is further strengthened by a talented receiving corps. However, challenges lie ahead for coach Mike Locksley, who must rebuild an offensive line that returns just one starter. On the defensive side, the Terrapins showed improvement last year, allowing 5.01 yards per play, down from 5.76 the previous year. Defensive coordinator Brian Williams will rely on key transfers to revamp the defensive front and address the loss of cornerbacks Jakorian Bennett and Deonte Banks in the secondary.

BYU faces a challenging schedule in their Big 12 debut, including a non-conference game against Arkansas and tough matchups within the league. To exceed expectations, they'll need strong quarterback play from Pitt transfer Kedon Slovis and contributions from other transfers like Aidan Robbins from UNLV. Last year, the Cougars' defense struggled, allowing 29.5 points and 172.7 rushing yards per game. To address this, head coach Kalani Sitake brought in Jay Hill as the new defensive coordinator. Hill, who has experience both at Weber State and under Kyle Whittingham at Utah, inherits a defense with seven returning starters. While the team faces a transition period due to the new league and scheme, the foundation for improvement is there.

Duke's football program saw a significant turnaround under Mike Elko last year, and with 17 starters returning, they're eyeing an ACC Championship run in 2023. Quarterback Riley Leonard is back to lead an offense that was third in the ACC in yards per play, and left tackle Graham Barton stands out as a top offensive lineman. Elko's defensive expertise also paid dividends last year, reducing the points allowed per game from 39.8 to 22.1. However, the Blue Devils face a challenging ACC schedule and a non-conference game against Notre Dame. While they won't be the underdogs they were last year, the experience and coaching should make them a team to watch this season.

Florida Gators fans should brace themselves for a rebuilding year in 2023. With a new quarterback in Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz and only four returning starters on a defense that struggled last season, second-year coach Billy Napier has his work cut out for him. The offense does have some bright spots, notably in the backfield with Trevor Etienne and Montrell Johnson, but the loss of guard O'Cyrus Torrence could be a significant blow to the offensive line. New defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong faces the daunting task of turning around a unit that was less than stellar last year. While a bowl game would be a reasonable achievement for this transitional team, the real focus is likely on laying the groundwork for a more competitive 2024 season.

Hey Cyclone Nation, let's talk about the bounce-back season that's on the horizon! Last year was a hiccup, but if you know anything about Coach Matt Campbell, it's that he doesn't let setbacks define us. We're Iowa State, and we're coming back stronger.

On offense, Hunter Dekkers is back, and he's got something to prove. Sure, we lost Xavier Hutchinson to the NFL, but that just means it's time for a new star receiver to rise. And let's not forget about that offensive line; they're hungry to show they can pave the way for our running backs.

But let's talk about the real MVPs—our defense. These guys were the stingiest in the Big 12 last year, allowing just 20.3 points per game. We've got seven starters returning, so expect that wall to hold strong. Yeah, we'll miss the likes of MJ McDonald IV, MJ Anderson, and safety Anthony Johnson, but this is Iowa State; we reload, not rebuild.

So, get ready, Ames! This season, we're not just aiming for six wins; we're aiming to turn heads and break hearts. Go Cyclones! 🌪️🏈

Hey Sooners fans, are you ready to bounce back? Last season was a tough pill to swallow, but let's face it, we're Oklahoma, and we don't stay down for long. Coach Brent Venables is on a mission to turn things around, especially after that 0-5 record in one-score games last season. The defense, which had its struggles, particularly against the run, is getting a facelift. Venables has been busy in the transfer portal, and a second year under this staff should bring about some much-needed improvement.

On the offensive side, play-caller Jeff Lebby has his work cut out for him. With Marvin Mims gone, finding new playmakers at receiver is a top priority. But don't sweat it too much; we've got a strong foundation. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel is set to light up the scoreboard, and running backs Gavin Sawchuk and Jovantae Barnes are ready to tear up the turf.

So, gear up, Oklahoma! We're on the road to redemption, and it starts now. Boomer Sooner! 🏈🔥

Bruin fans, are you ready for a season that could redefine UCLA football? After a nine-win season last year, the best under Chip Kelly, the Bruins are hungry for more. But let's not kid ourselves; there are challenges ahead. The offense is in a state of transition, with true freshman Dante Moore stepping in as the frontrunner to replace Dorian Thompson-Robinson at quarterback. Carson Steele, a Ball State transfer, is expected to fill the big shoes left by Zach Charbonnet in the backfield. And let's not forget, the O-line is getting a makeover with three new starters.

But hey, it's not all about the offense. The defense has its own set of hurdles. Last year, they allowed 29 points per game and 6.1 yards per snap in Pac-12 play. Ouch! But there's a silver lining. New defensive play-caller D'Anton Lynn has a solid foundation to work with, including edge rushers Laiatu Latu and Grayson Murphy. So, buckle up, Bruins! And let's not forget Quinshon Judkins, who's back to tear up the turf as one of the nation's top running backs. The defensive line is still a force to be reckoned with, thanks to Keith Randolph Jr. and Jer'Zhan Newton, who racked up a combined 26 tackles for a loss last season. Beaver Nation, it's time to build a dam around the Pac-12 because Oregon State is surging into 2023 with momentum! Fighting Irish fans, brace yourselves for a season that could catapult Notre Dame back into the College Football Playoff conversation! After a respectable 9-4 debut season under Coach Marcus Freeman, the Irish are hungry for more. Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman is set to supercharge the quarterback position, and with offensive linemen Joe Alt and Blake Fisher leading the charge, the offense is in good hands. Audric Estime is the powerhouse in a deep running back roster, but there are questions to answer in the receiving corps and at tight end, especially after Michael Mayer's NFL departure. New play-caller Gerard Parker has his work cut out for him, but the potential is sky-high. On defense, Freeman's squad is rock-solid, particularly at linebacker and in the secondary, although the absence of Isaiah Foskey on the line will be felt. The season's fate could hinge on three pivotal matchups—home games against USC and Ohio State, and a road clash with Clemson. So, mark those dates and get ready to cheer, because Notre Dame is on a mission to make 2023 a year to remember!
